     Grey's Anatomy focuses on young people struggling to be doctors and doctors struggling to stay human. It's the drama and intensity of medical training mixed with the funny, sexy, painful lives of interns who are about to discover that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white. Real life only comes in shades of gray.

Storyline:

      In Season-1, Grey's Anatomy introduced Meredith who is a first year surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital, the toughest surgical residency program west of Harvard. She and fellow first-year interns Cristina Yang, Izzie Stevens, George O'Malley and Alex Karev were students yesterday. Today they're doctors and, in a world where on the job training can be a matter of life and death, they're all juggling the ups and downs of their own personal lives.

The five interns struggle to form friendships in this most stressful and competitive atmosphere. Meredith's medical ambition is overshadowed by a troubling secret: Her mother, a noted pioneering surgeon, is struggling with a tragic and devastating illness. Cristina is a study in contradiction; highly competitive and driven, she eschews any favors in order to make it on her own. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens is the small-town girl who grew up dirt poor and, in spite of paying for her medical career by modeling, still struggles with her self-esteem. George O'Malley is the warm but insecure boy next door who always manages to do or say the wrong thing at the wrong time. In spite of his attraction to women, he's treated as "just one of the girls." And Alex Karev, the intern the other interns love to have, masks his working class roots with arrogance and ambition.

The interns are guided by an established team of doctors who are determined to shape them into skilled surgeons or break them: Miranda Bailey, a senior resident responsible for training them, is so tough that she's nicknamed "The Nazi." Derek Shepherd is the flirtatious but very capable surgeon who shares a forbidden but undeniable sexual attraction with Meredith. Preston Burke's arrogance is second only to his skill with a scalpel. Overseeing them all is Dr. Richard Webber, Seattle Grace's paternal, but no-nonsense chief of surgery.

     The 2nd Season focuses on Meredith and Derek's relationship, which came to an abrupt halt when it was revealed that Derek is married to surgeon Addison Montgomery. Izzie and Alex embark on a relationship of their own (although cut short when Izzie falls for heart patient Denny Duquette), as do Cristina Yang and Preston Burke. Doctor Bailey becomes pregnant, and more is revealed about her personal life.

     The 3rd Season ended in May of 2007. As the season came to a close, Burke called off his wedding to Cristina at the church, Chief Webber stayed on as the Chief of Surgery, Callie was appointed Chief Resident, and George learned he failed the final intern exam. The relationship between Derek and Meredith, as well as the triangle between Callie, George, and Izzie were left unresolved. Addison decides to start a new life in Los Angeles in the spin-off Private Practice

     The Season-4 was centered around Meredith having a huge breakthrough with her personal life including Derek and her mother. Derek also realized he continually failed Meredith. Meredith and Derek performed clinical trials on patients with brain tumors. They lost all of their patients except for one whose boyfriend died just before her life saving surgery. After finally succeeding, Meredith finally took a risk and reunited with Derek. Almost all the cast had a kiss, including Meredith and Derek, George and Lexie, Richard and Adele, Alex and Izzie, and, Erica and Callie.

     In this Season, Grey's Anatomy introduced a lesbian story line with a romance between the confident and sexually voracious Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and the professionally ambitious yet personally restrained Dr. Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith). The story line offered both the drama Grey's is known for and — despite some marginally exploitative threesome talk — a truthfulness network television has rarely achieved when it comes to lesbian relationships. For Callie and Erica, the season ended with a kiss, and what could be the beginning of a passionate romance.

 We also learned about Alex's needy mother and part of his past. After Meredith and Derek's resumption of their relationship, Derek left to break up with Rose, his girlfriend who had come between the two previously.

     Unlike previous seasons, this Season-5 has not prominently featured the romance of Meredith and Derek. Instead the season has focused on Derek's discovery of Meredith's mother's journals from when she was a resident; Lexie and her fellow interns performing procedures on each other (from injections to surgeries) in an attempt to learn things they believe they are not learning from their residents; and the reappearance of Denny Duquette.

The sixth season introduced several new residents joining the Seattle Grace Hospital staff because of the merger with Mercy West Hospital. Those residents include Nora Zehetner's Dr. Reed Adamson, Jesse Williams' Dr. Jackson Avery, Robert Baker's Dr. Charles Percy and Sarah Drew's Dr. April Kepner, who was fired in episode six.

Kim Raver joined the cast on November 12 as Dr. Teddy Altman, a cardio-thoracic surgeon and Iraqi-war veteran who served with Dr. Owen Hunt. It was announced on January 4, 2009 that Raver has become a series regular.
